The Carl Marty Story
1899 -1979

The 'Golden area' (sic: probably should be era -webmaster) of the northwoods resort industry was ushered in by Carl O. Marty Jr. with the building of the luxurious Northernaire Hotel and Vacation Complex, and the Showboat Lounge, both fronting on both Big Stone and Deer Lakes. He and his brother Bob built the Northernaire in 1947. Fred 'Cy' Williams created the design and took over the construction, often manufacturing the needed lumber at his own lumber and planing mill.
Marty prided himself in nothing but the finest for the Northernaire guests. Top rated chefs and choice cuisine were soon the respected "Hallmarks" of the "Waldorf of the Wilderness." Carl's unaffected personality and gracious hospitality not only attracted well paying guests world wide, but an endless number of metropolitan newspaper columnists, radio personalities and in later years television and movie stars. National sports figures were common to the fairways, waterways and ski slopes offered at this North Woods retreat. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad often ran 'Northernaire Specials' to Three Lakes to accommodate the crowds destined for the Northernaire.
His compassion for wildlife, especially the forest orphans, brought him fame and recognition throughout the world, attracting attention of the media as well as such noted wildlife and nature authorities as Walt Disney, Marlin Perkins, Sterling North, Sigurd Olson, Cleveland Amory and Sam Campbell, just to mention a few. His compassion for the lessor creatures of God's Kindom carried over into his response to the needy and the underprivileged of the human race. Many books are available locally, such as "Ginger and Her Woodland Orphans," "Mr Conservation," "Mother is a St. Bernard," and "Racoons are the Brightest People."
Carl was the eternal optimist blessed with a fertile mind rich in new and positive ideas. As one commentator wrote, "To break bread with Carl Marty  was, each time, always a new experience of gaining fresh food for the mind, the body, and the soul."
