Katherine "Kay" Elizabeth Updegraff Johnson

[6-25-15  Decorah, Iowa;
                and
Herbert "Herb" Johnson

[1-10-11 Janesville, Wisconsin; 12-30-92 Charlottesville, Virginia]

After having lunch with Kay in Decorah, Iowa, in a tea room located where her father, Frank Germann's haberdashery, was once located, Carol Showalter, Kay's cousin, writes that: Herbert "...met Kay when he was in college and she was in high school.  (He)...never married until he married (Kay)...on her 65th birthday, June 25, 1980.  He died December 30, 1992."

Further, Carol writes:
"Kay was in Iowa City and Herb was in Pittsburgh when she wrote and told him that she was no longer married.  For SIXTEEN years they met in Minneapolis and Decorah and dated before they married.  Then they retired to Charlottesville, Virginia and summered in Decorah until his death.  He's buried about 45 minutes from us in (DeForest) Wisconsin so she and Margi started visiting us when they went to his grave."

Paul Fitz-Gibbon's comment: The tea room, Hart's Tea & Tarts, mentioned above, was completely destroyed inside by an electrical fire during the early morning hours of June 26, 2009; and the daughter of the owner, Chelsea Nicole Hart, 25 years old, living upstairs, was tragically killed.
