Six sons of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur P. Wickersham, who live 3-1/2
miles northeast of East Rochester, in West Township, near Wild Duck
school house are serving In the armed forces. 'Mr. and Mrs.
Wickersham (Rosa Ruff) have 11 children, seven boys and four girls.
Pvt. Lester Glen, Z4, Marines, former Republic Steel employee
in Canton, graduated last December from turret gunnery school and is
now stationed In Mojave, Calf. His wife. (Bernice Woods) and
daughter, Shirley Ann, 3, reside in Winona with her parents.
He entered service April 13, 1944, and received basic training at
San Diego, Calif.
Pfc. Lloyd Daniel, 27, Marines, entered service the same day
as Lester. He received training at San Diego and Camp
Pendleton, Calif., and is now on Okinawa. He has served for
nine months in the Pacific with the 1st Marine Division. Mrs.
Wickersham (Leona Omstacher) and their three children, Carl 8, Rose
4, and Danny 2 reside In New Alexander. He was formerly employed at
Republic Steel.
Pfc. Kenneth Dale, 20, Marines, receiver of the Purple Heart
and Presidential Citation. has reported to the Santa Cruz
convalescent hospital In California for further treatment of wounds
suffered on June 17 and 25 on Saipan. He returned to the
States last fall and recently spent a 30 day furlough at his home.
A former student at Minerva High School, he entered service March
17, 1943, while employed by Republic Steel. He was hit with
shrapnel in the right jaw, breaking the lower jaw bone and
causing the loss of 17 teeth.
Pfc. Roscoe Virgil, 32, Army has been overseas for 19 months.
Serving in New Georgia and New Guinea. He was employed in the
Hartville Celery Swamps before entering service May 25, 1942.
He received training at Keesler Field, Miss., Sioux Falls, S. D.,
and Aberdeen Proving Grounds. His wife (Esther Goolsky) and daughter
Virginia Lee, 2-1/2, reside in Sorrento, Fla.
Pfc. Wilbur Ford. 29, Army who wears the Silver Star and
Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the Bougainville campaign as a
member of the 37th Division, is a rifle instructor at Camp Blanding,
Fla. Mrs. Wickersham (Mary Lenagher) resides with her parents in
New Alexander. After entering service Jan, 21, 1941, he received
training at Camp Shelby, Miss. and Indiantown Gap. Pa., and served
overseas 3 months. Pfc. Wickersham, a farmer before entering the
service, returned to his station May 9th after a 10 day furlough.
In night combat 1 he battled his way thru a group of Japs after
being blown out of a pill-box.
Corp. Harold. 25. Army, a member of a military police unit In
Hawaii entered service In March,1943 while employed at Republic
Steel. He received training at Keesler Field, Miss.,
Amarillo, Texas. and Battle Creek, Mich., and has been overseas
since December 19,1943. He is a Minerva High graduate of 1937. |
